Resize video

Making the picture smaller is the biggest single thing you can do to a video file size: going from 1080p to 720p halves it and more. You can also crop to a different shape, which is how a wide clip becomes a tall one for a phone.

How to use it

  1. 1 Add the video.
  2. 2 Pick a preset resolution or enter custom dimensions.
  3. 3 Choose whether to add bars or crop in when the shape changes.
  4. 4 Encode and download.

Questions about resize video

Does lowering the resolution make the file smaller?

Substantially, yes. Halving each dimension quarters the pixel count, and the bitrate needed to keep it looking good falls with it. It is a far more effective saving than lowering quality at the original size.

Can I upscale a video?

You can enter larger dimensions, but nothing is gained. The encoder is stretching existing pixels, so the result is a softer picture in a bigger file. Upscaling is only worth doing when a platform rejects anything below a minimum size.

How do I make a landscape video vertical?

Choose a vertical target such as 1080 by 1920 and crop rather than letterbox, then position the crop over the subject. Letterboxing instead keeps the whole frame and adds bars, which most vertical feeds display poorly.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The whole thing runs inside the browser tab you already have open. Your file is read straight from your own disk, worked on there, and handed back as a download. Nothing is sent anywhere, nothing is stored, and there is no account and no queue.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no server-side limit because there is no server. The practical ceiling is your device memory, since the file and its output both have to fit in the tab. Files up to a few hundred megabytes are usually fine on a desktop machine, while phones and older laptops will struggle sooner. If a large file fails, close other tabs and try again.

Does it work offline?

Yes, once the page has loaded once. The engine is cached by the browser, so you can turn off your connection, reload the page and keep working. That is a useful side effect of doing the processing locally rather than a separate offline mode you have to enable.
